From Talk to Action
There’s a saying, “Talk is cheap,” but it may cost you more than you think. This is especially true when entering into retirement.
Think about it: Have you ever caught yourself endlessly talking about something you plan to do—only to realize weeks, months, or even years later that you haven’t actually taken the first step?
It’s a common trap. The conversations feel productive, even energizing, but without action, they’re just a costly illusion. What’s worse? Research suggests that merely talking about your plans can trick your brain into feeling like you’ve already achieved them.
Studies show that publicly announcing goals can sometimes reduce the likelihood of follow-through. Our brains are wired to reward us with a hit of dopamine when we visualize and articulate our goals, creating a feeling of accomplishment even though no actual steps have been taken. This isn’t a problem in itself—visualization and goal setting are powerful tools for creating clarity and direction. But if we stop there, we risk confusing intention with achievement.
For my clients transitioning into retirement, this phenomenon can have profound consequences. Whether it’s dreaming of starting a passion project, deepening relationships, or embracing a healthier lifestyle, those moments of “backtalk”—speaking about the dream without backing it up with action—don’t just delay their goals; they quietly erode confidence and momentum.
This isn’t about silencing your dreams or abandoning visualization. In fact, imagining your ideal future is a vital first step. It primes your mind for success and makes your goals feel real and achievable. However, to turn that vision into reality, consistent action is essential. This is where a thinking partner, like a coach, can help—offering guidance, accountability, and fresh perspectives to move you from dreaming to doing.
So, how do you bridge the gap? Start small. Tiny, meaningful steps can transform the spark of an idea into forward momentum. Want to write a book? Draft a single paragraph. Thinking about rekindling a hobby? Spend 15 minutes on it this weekend. Every action, no matter how small, shifts you from thinking to doing and reinforces your commitment.
When you align your vision with deliberate action, you not only achieve your goals but also redefine your identity. You’re no longer someone who dreams—you’re someone who does.
So, the next time you catch yourself talking about what you want, ask yourself: What’s one step I can take today to make this real?
It’s time to build on your visualization and turn it into action. Your future self is waiting. What will you do today to move closer to your vision?
