Honoring Retirement with Rituals
One of my clients came to me six months into her retirement. As we delved into the challenges she was experiencing, one that was at the top of her mind was the struggle she was having in deciding whether to have a traditional retirement party.
Emails and calls about scheduling the event kept trickling in, creating a lingering tie to her former workplace. While the idea of a party didn’t resonate with her, she hadn’t declined outright, leaving her in a state of limbo that was holding her back from fully embracing her post-career life.
As we worked together, we explored the deeper meaning behind rituals. I introduced her to Abigail Brenner, M.D.’s insight that rituals have a unique power to mark life’s transitions. Brenner writes, “...so transformative are rites of passage that even a single one can divide one's life into before and after.” This perspective clicked for her.
She realized she didn’t have to follow the expected path of a workplace celebration. Instead, she chose to hold a gathering with family and close friends—those who had supported her throughout her career and would remain part of her life in retirement. This intentional act honored her past while anchoring her next chapter in the relationships that truly mattered.
Her decision highlights an important truth: rituals aren’t just traditions; they’re tools for closing one chapter and stepping intentionally into the next. Retirement is more than a change in daily routines—it’s a profound redefinition of identity and purpose. By creating rituals that feel authentic, we can gain clarity, comfort, and a sense of continuity. As William Bridges reminds us in Transitions, every new beginning starts with an ending, and rituals provide a meaningful way to mark that shift and create space for what’s next.
But beyond the well-known send-offs like retirement parties, how can we choose this rite of passage that feels good to us and allows us to put a period or exclamation point on one chapter in our book of life before we turn the page to the next? Here are a wide range of ideas to consider and play around with as you decide what feels right for you:
Closure Rituals: Reflect on a Career Well-Spent
Closure rituals honor past accomplishments and let us move forward with a clear sense of completion.
Writing a “career eulogy” can help you reflect on key achievements, contributions, and moments of growth, acknowledging the career chapter and preparing to let go.
A small gathering with colleagues to share stories and lessons can also offer a meaningful way to conclude, aligning with Bridges' concept of marking an ending to ease the transition into what comes next.
Threshold Rituals: Step Into a New Chapter
As Bruce Feiler suggests in Life Is in the Transitions, marking the entry into a new phase helps set a clear and positive tone. Acknowledging this threshold not only brings clarity to your new chapter but also invites the support of those who matter most.
A simple act, such as planting a tree, symbolizes growth in this next chapter,
A “rite of passage” dinner with loved ones allows you to share your hopes for the future.
Reflective Rituals: Embrace the Neutral Zone
Bridges describes the “neutral zone” as the phase between an ending and a new beginning, where reflection becomes key.
Journaling or mindfulness practices during this time can help you process the emotions of leaving a career behind.
Consider a daily gratitude practice that shifts focus toward the new opportunities ahead, creating a calm, centered mindset as you redefine your priorities.
Legacy Project: Preserve and Share Your Story
Creating a legacy project can honor your career impact while offering a chance to pass on wisdom. Preserving your story for future generations acknowledges your accomplishments and allows you to look forward with a sense of contribution, aligned with Bridges’ philosophy of honoring the past to embrace the future.
Choose a format that works for you, such as a book, blog, video, or even a scrapbook
A "First Day" Celebration: Embrace New Beginnings
Set aside your first day of retirement for a meaningful celebration, just as we mark the first day of school or a new job. Celebrating the first day as a fresh start establishes a positive foundation for the journey ahead.
This could be a quiet personal ceremony where you set intentions for the future
Create a vision board
Reflect on goals and dreams
Nature-Based Rituals: Grounding in the Present
Rituals in nature offer grounding and perspective, especially during significant transitions. Nature-based rituals can reinforce a sense of continuity as you move through change.
Develop a practice such as a daily walk at sunrise, on the beach, or in a forest to symbolize a fresh start
Create a gratitude stone collection—each stone representing something meaningful—to help anchor you in the present while honoring life’s natural rhythms.
Forgiveness Ritual: Release Past Regrets
Reflecting on “what ifs” can be natural as you look back, and a forgiveness ritual can help release any lingering regrets. Letting go of these attachments provides a clean slate, allowing you to move forward with greater freedom and peace.
Write a letter to yourself or others- then choose to send, save, or discard
If discarding, consider an act of release such as crumpling up, burning or burying the letter
Vision for Retirement Ceremony: Set Intentions for the Future
Creating a vision for retirement helps ground your goals and offers direction. Such rituals serve as both a symbolic and practical framework for stepping into your next chapter with purpose.
Create a vision board
Write a retirement manifesto
Gather with close friends to share your hopes.
Whatever ritual you choose, the key message is that they are powerful tools for marking life’s turning points and providing comfort, clarity, and continuity. As my client discovered, honoring the transition to retirement with a chosen ritual can be transformative, allowing us to celebrate what was while embracing what lies ahead. Whether through symbolic acts like planting a tree, celebrating with loved ones, or quiet reflection, each ritual serves as a bridge to our next chapter, helping us let go of the past and step into a meaningful, fulfilling future. As Brenner shares, rituals allow us to “… create a pathway that’s deeply our own, allowing us to retire not just from a career but into a life fully embraced.”
