Purpose through Planning
In a world filled with distractions and constant busyness, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters, leading to feelings of emptiness or lack of fulfillment. This discontent is especially so for many retirees.
Purpose can be the answer to those feelings, in other words, the belief that your life matters and that you make a difference. But how to answer what can seem like a significant and looming question, "What is my Purpose?" can seem elusive or overwhelming.
We can find the pathway to feeling purposeful through planning. Taking it step by step, as we set clear goals and design a roadmap to achieve those goals, brings us closer to that vision. Recognizing that purpose is active, can be ever-changing, and can be realized through small actions, large endeavors, or anything in between is also vital. Here is a process that is of benefit to my clients. I hope it provides you guidance as well:
➡ Ignite the Flame: Begin with self-reflection as you consider your values, passions, and interests.
➡ Define your vision: Envision the kind of person you want to become and the life you want to lead. Imagine your ideal future and what it looks like. This vision will serve as a guiding light and a source of motivation.
➡ Set meaningful goals based on your vision: Remembering that all goals are not equal, prioritize them based on urgency, potential impact, and resonance for you.
➡ Move from contemplation to inspired action: Create an action plan. Cultivate daily habits and routines that align with your goals to ensure forward movement.
➡ Embrace the pivot: Stay flexible and open to possibilities as the unexpected arises.
➡ Draw on the power of connections: Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you.
➡ Reflect, Refine, and Redefine: Life is ever-changing, and so are you. Periodically reflect on your journey and reevaluate your goals and purpose.
As you grow and evolve, your sense of purpose may change. Embrace the opportunity to refine and align your plans with your current aspirations.
Finding purpose through planning is an ongoing process. It requires self-awareness, commitment, and the willingness to adapt. But the impact of having a meaningful, fulfilling, and ever-evolving life is worth your investment of time and energy.
It’s an investment in you.
